The Melton Veterinary Hospital at 10735 McCreight Street in Bastrop provides services to family pets and horses. Horse activities are very popular in the parish and a fully equipped local facility is handy for routine care and emergencies. Dr. Glen Melton and a staff of dedicated veterinary professionals are committed to providing quality care to area animals. Established in 1978, a new state of the art facility was completed in 2009 to offer full services and premium care to pets in a friendly comfortable environment. Please visit their website and Facebook accountfor more information.
After practicing veterinary medicine in Bastrop for 30 years, I made a decision to build a new veterinary hospital in 2008. A new facility meant debt but it would provide me with a well-equipped facility and the environment to provide exceptional care. Now six years later, we have a five doctor practice with a “state of the art” hospital which has been instrumental in attracting sharp young doctors. Business is great. It was the best decision for me, my family and our community.

ANIMAL EVENTS

A number of horse riding events are scheduled annually at the Chemin-a-haut State Park. Equine friendly trails are designated in the park. Regular livestock and rodeo type events take place at the Morehouse Activity Center (MAC) in Bastrop and private arenas. The MAC is a tremendous resource of information about horse boarding facilities, livestock veterinarians and farriers that serve the area. The MAC has RV spaces available for events and animal related emergencies. Ruby Collins coordinates activities at the MAC and can be contacted at (318) 281-7123 for information or you may visit the Morehouse Activity Center website for more information on the facilities.
Morehouse Parish has an active Humane Society and Shelter which is operated through a corporative effort with the City of Bastrop. The welfare of animals is a priority to the volunteers who support the local shelter.
